I'm in the process of obtaining a couple of HVLP sprayers. I need to know what size tips people use for primer, base, and clear. I would like to use one gun for base, one just for clear and use one or the other for primer.

I use a 1.8 for flake and for some heavier primers. If you're going to be shooting flake you're going to need a bigger hole, know what I mean? But for clears and non flaked paints the 1.3, 1.4 is good. Some guys even use 2.2 or 2.3 for flakes and such, but you gotta know your gun and how to use it before you go shooting thru a hole that big.

Practice, practice, practice.

Like flamethrower said a 1.7 could be used for flake, or some primers. Todays paints have gone to more high solids, which need more atomization, so tip sizes have reduced to better atomize the paint. You can get P-Sheets from your paint manufacurer that will give recomended gun sizes for their products. Most of todays paints and primers will recomend using between 1.3-1.5 tips.
