Marker for laying out stripes

I have a car that I need to put stripes on. The paint is fresh with clearcoat. What kind of marker/pencil is good for making small marks to indicate where to start laying out the stripes?

I never mark up fresh paint, too risky. I put little pieces of masking tape on the car. Maybe pinpoint on the tape with a pencil or marker to be more precise.

I agree, just use small pieces of tape. You can mark the beginning, then the end and then run your tape from the one marker to the other marker.

I did this video of a paint job I did on a Cobra that I had to put some stripes.

A soft lead pencil, such as a 2B or 3B, can be a good option for marking on the clearcoat. The soft lead won't scratch the surface, but it will leave a visible mark that you can easily wipe away with a soft cloth or eraser. Or you can use a wax pencil, also known as a china marker or grease pencil, which can work well on the clearcoat.
