I was was wondering if it is a good idea to clean bare metal with simple green before bondo:think1:

Simple green would not be a great idea. Any detergent type cleaner will leave behind a residue. I use a fast thinner, or if a after I put down some filler, I use a surface prep of some sort. Thinner tends to not be very kind to plastic fillers.
Also simple green has water in it, so flash rust may be an issue.
