ghost flames on a new helmet

I plan on painting ghost flames on my new helmet. I think it's just black gelcoat. If I scuffed it thouroghly would it provide a good enough base? Or will I need an adhesion promoter? Also, what grit of paper would you recommend for scuffing (if that's what I need to do)?

I would wetsand the helmet with 800 grit (make sure it is sanded good), then lay the flames, spray the adhesion promoter on the flames, then spray the ghost flames.

Then I would pull the flame tape off, spray another coat of adhesion promoter on the complete helmet (spraying over the ghost flames will not hurt it), then clear the complete helmet.

Even if you find that the helmet is painted, you could do the same steps as above.
