Ghost Flames for the beginner

I am going to try painting ghost flames for the first time and the more I read the more questions I have. I am going for a faint flames possible using pearls.

What type of paint is best?

Is there a rule of thumb on mixing?

I personally use the PPG Global basecoat system. Most any basecoat/clearcoat system should work fine for you though.

Read all the manufacturer labels for the best mixing ratio. Mix everything as per the manufacture except the pearl you will use for the flames. You can over reduce this so it is a little thinner than normal.

Mixing the pearl is what I have questions on.

Do you add the pearl to your clear?
I know you can keep adding the color or thinning untill you get the color I want. What I'm looking for is a place to start for instance 8:1 to save time or mixing more paint than necessary
