Gas Tank Painting - Strip to metal or not?

I have a Magna Gen3 motorcycle gas tank that I have purchased that I hope to paint myself this upcoming summer. In my research I found conflicting opinions about whether to strip the tank down to the metal or not. The tank I will be painting is in excellent shape with no rust inside or out and no dents. My inclination is to keep the original paint, sand it and then paint over it. However, some paint experts insist that a tank must be stripped down to metal. I will be painting with a high quality, urethane based auto spray paint and clear coating with Spray Max 2K Clear Coat. The question is should I strip down to bare metal or not?

You can paint over the prepped original paint if it's not an enamel or lacquer paint job, if it doesn't have any adhesion problems, or if you don't have a lot of extra prep on it like having to remove a lot of decals.

Most likely that is a basecoat/clearcoat, you should be fine.
