When doing flames that overlap, be sure and add detail to it. Here's a tip that will give it somewhat a more 3 diminsional look.
Let's say you have two tips that overlap each other, choose one of the flames tips you would like to have overlap the other. Now at the point it overlaps, place a piece of tape and masking paper on each side so you only see that one tip. Now mix up a color that is lighter or darker than what the actual color is. Now lightly fade that color in at the point of overlap. Remove the paper and you will see what you have just done. You have created one flame has the appearance that it really does go over the other flame.
For even a more detailed effect, you could also add a drop shadow to it.
