It's not a huge deal to mask off a small spot to prime but here's an easy way to avoid the need to tape up in some instances. Have a few pieces of cardboard with different sized holes around and rather then mask up, simply spray the primer through the hole in the cardboard. It also prevents overspray from traveling further then necessary to. One other quick tip, never prime all the way to a tape line as there is a good chance it will be visible after paint.
