paint a boat?

what do i need to paint a boat? just a special clear coat?

I realiz this thread is pretty old, but I just use regular base/clear on boats and PWC's. I do always use epoxy as a sealer over the old finish though.

how does the bottom hold up riding on those carpet pieces?

On the PWC's I've done it holds up fine. The boat in the pic I just did the blue section and the flames, rest is factory finish.
