Old post, but good questions. Possibly he just clearcoated the flames. Probably would have left a pretty hefty edge though!

but without keying the existing paintwork then the paint will take but drive down the road and get a stonechip and the whjole lot will start peeling off.

I agree. That's why I mentioned that possibly he just clearcoated the flames.
Once they got them masked up, you would scotch bright within the flames. Then you would base and clear the flames only.

Yea, you are right!!! Good observation. I would say possibly that is scuffed up, but yep, A LOT of shine still left on those flames!
