KITCHEN BENCH TOPS

HAS ANYONE EVER USED BASECOAT /CLEARCOAT ON A KITCHEN BENCH.
IM CONSIDERING THIS FOR MY LANDLORD BUT WAS WONDERING IF SOMEONE HAS DONE THIS AND DO THEY FIND IT DURABLE ENOUGH?
IM HOPING THE CLEAR WILL BE STRONG ENOUGH AS IT WILL MEAN SOME FREE RENT IN EXCHANGE FOR MY WORKMANSHIP

Not sure how a bench will hold up to peoples buts sliding around on them,but a friend cleared a wood tabletop and it's holding up very well.No base though,just kept clearing the wood.
