Hayabusa rebirth

I had an opportunity to purchase a wrecked 2000 model Hayabusa for a good price, so I snatched it up. I decided to make this strictly a "track-only" bike, and preserve my 2009 bike for strictly street riding.

Here are the pics the day after I brought it home.

After doing some trading and bartering, as well as selling some of the good parts, I had a running, riding motorcycle!
Here it is after the installation of an extended swingarm, and some Yamaha R1 wheels. They drop about 3-4 lbs off per wheel and tire combo, and cost way less than the $3500 aftermarket wheels which are a 1/2 lb lighter.

I traded the stock wheels for the exhaust

My two bikes:

New tail section, Generation 2 (2008-2013) tail section, 8" longer.

As pictured, Bike went 6.22@118 with me being 270 in shorts, on motor (Yes, I am fat!)

Decided to clean up the lines a little on the tail section. First, removing the bosses where it would bolt on the stock rear subframe:

2012-09-25_10-03-26_665.jpg

I also purchased 2008-up Gen2 "race plastics", which is a fancy name for "fiberglass". I did not like the gauge surrounds that they sold, and I would not be using gauges anyway. The inner fairing looked completely unfinished, so I decided to fab up a little glass to finish them off more to my liking.

I used thin cardboard and trimmed it to fit the way I want. Yes, that is cardboard from a cereal box!

Then I laid in some glass

And some rough finish work

Scored some race rearsets for a good price:

Got another factory tank and cut it down. This allows you to get behind the windscreen a little better, and also allows me to move forward a couple more inches. That moves the weight forward, and helps prevent wheelies. It looks rough, but once I finish grinding it and smear some putty, it will look pretty ;)

I purchased a new pipe on a Black Friday sale after thanksgiving! This thing is pure sexy, kind like exhaust porn. All hand welded stainless.

Here is a pic with all the bodywork, minus the pipe and cut tank:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v59/LudicrousSpeed/2000 Busa project/DSC07839.jpg

I had a hell of a time trying to figure out where to cut the bodywork to fit the new sidewinder pipe. This was one of my failed ideas. I ended up just winging it!

2012-12-04_15-33-43_897.jpg

Turns out that once I got the pipe to clear, I can take off the megaphone and slip the body off the pipe, no need to cut it all the way to the bottom, so I had to glass it back up
2012-12-18_16-29-47_633.jpg

Made a bracket for the megaphone. Not bad for a couple guys with some scrap aluminum and a hacksaw!

Had a guy custom make me some clutch and brake res covers, with my logo:

Pic with the new pipe. Also filled in the cutout on the tail where the factory passenger peg/exhaust mount was

Since I plan on running a lockup clutch later on, I grabbed this quick access cover when I saw it for a good deal. Three bolts allow me to access the clutch to tune it, instead of having to take the whole cover off of the engine. The problem is that it is longer and larger then the stock cover. That means cutting the body to clear, which I expected. What I didn't expect was the fact that the new pipe would not clear! Ugh.... Luckily, the guy I purchased it from has a direct contact with the company. With me doing some prototyping, and him sending pictures and dimensions, we came up with a "fix".

By spacing the megaphone back, it clears the cover. But now, I need a new bracket to hold it. It never ends!

In the middle of this, I bought used Handy lift off of Craigslist. No more sitting on the floor! I am getting too old to slide around on my butt to work on these thing....
DSC08420_zps49c43f2e.jpg

The lift made it much easier to remove the front forks, dis-assemble them, install new seals, and internally lower them 2". This lowers the center of gravity, and also helps to keep it from pulling wheelies on the track.

Made a new, aluminum dash. Yes, I know the gauge is crooked, it is only on there with tape for the time being. That is a digital nitrous pressure gauge. I need to install a couple warning lights as well when I get time.

TO get to this point has taken me over two years. I have been limited only by my finances, not time, lol....

The body is close to being done, once I get the ride height set and all trimming done. Soon to be primered, and then to decide what color to go with. I have only changed my mind about a dozen times.....

Lookin' great! A LOT of work you're doing there! Can't believe the fabing of the tank. Gonna be slick once you get it done.
Be sure and have that tank pressure checked and sealed. Hate to see you paint it, then end up with some bubbles. I know first hand the feeling :freak:

If you do the pressure check yourself, once it's checked, you can clean it, then seal it with Red Kote Tank Sealer

I've had very good success with this. Been using it for about 8 years now.

Thanks for the kind words!

I am getting prepared to seal the tank now. Maybe even today. I am using Caswell's tank sealer. Called Dragons Blood, becaue of it's red color. Lots of guys in the racing field use it, because it has proven to be impervious to the racing fuels some of the guys use. If it will withstand that rocket fuel, it should be fine with my 93 octane pump gas.

More pics today. I bought a "hugger", or a fender that goes over the rear tire to prevent rubber and dirt from getting slung on the shock, swingarm, etc. It is supposed to bolt to the swingarm. Of course it doesn't, so back to modifying more glass!

Sounds like a great sealer then!

Looking forward to seeing more pics!

This is the hugger, made from fiberglass from a company named Catalyst. I have their bodywork on the rest of the bike, and it fit great. This one, not so much. It was not going to clear the tire, and was not wide enough at the front to mount correctly to my swingarm.
Made a line down the middle and sectioned it

2013-04-07_12-12-58_479_zpsceaaf415.jpg

Then I placed it on the swingarm, and clamped it where I wanted it. Bridged the gap with some cardboard that I covered with masking tape, coated in mold release.

Then I laid in two layers of random fiber mat, let it kick, and removed my tape. Test fitted it and then decided I was going to extend it a little further around the tire in the front, to keep the grime off of my nitrous bottle. This gave me a fit, trying to get the curves I wanted, and keeping them there!

Here is where I am at today, before adding the extension

How about my high-tech paint paddle as a brace? LOL

Wow! Putting in some serious work!
Yeah, but is nothing comapred to some builds, especially cars and trucks!

Well, after all that work, the part did not turn out like I wanted... After much trimming, and massaging, I ended up cutting the piece off that I just glassed in and started over!

Here is what it looks like with the bodywork roughed in:
2013-04-08_22-48-22_725_zps231f6b97.jpg

Sitting on the bike, I still need to weld the mounting tabs on the arm
2013-04-10_11-43-51_722_zpsa89c8bfd.jpg

See why I wanted it to go further around the front tire?
2013-04-10_11-44-04_403_zps1a1fb31a.jpg

Also got the tank that I cut down sealed. Now I can start bodywork on it.

And I STILL cannot decide what color to paint it! I change my mind almost daily!:

Still going through the prime/sand routine, been slow going depending on time and weather. I try to do most of my sanding outside as to not mess up my work area too bad. I did manage to get one large part out of the way, though. The frame! I did not want to paint the entire frame, as I don't want to disassemble it so far as taking out the engine. So that required lots of masking.

This is after I removed the masking and started putting it together to be able to roll it around again. I am reaching the point of diminishing returns (it is a track bike, anyway) and will be ordering paint soon.

What's the color of the day?! lol
Decided on a color yet?

Ended up buying HOK candy cherry red. It will have some sort of graphics, not sure exactly what. I have drawn some stuff out, but I am not the artist a lot you guys are, I just paint decent, lol!

Cool. What base?
Cinder red would sure make it a little easier on you.

I already ordered (and planned on using) Orion Silver, Galaxy Grey and Black.

I will have to check on Cinder Red. Why will it be so much easier? Bear with me, I have never used Candy and I'd hate to make a mess of it!

Cinder Red would make it easier since it has a red cast already to start with.
BUT since you plan on adding stripes, this will help make it easier to get the bike coated consistent with candy, plus the silver base will make it brighter.
This is assuming that you plan on using Orion as the main base color.

Yes, that link looked like Cinder Red.

OK, I appreciate the advice.

I got one box with my clear and reducer. Of course, the corner on one can is smashed. Never got the other box. Checked tracking and it is being returned to TCP. I call them and UPS damaged it, so they sent it back out to me today.......

FWIW, every order I have gotten has had something bent or damaged on a can. When there is nothing between the outside of the box and the can but the cardboard box, I would expect that. I wish they would package it a little better!

Paint is done! Well, close anyway.......... I bought a new Iwata airbrush early in the year for this build. WHen I pulled it out yesterday, the brush did not match the hose I had, so that meant no detail work for me. I will go back later and put it in, but for now I am done. I still need to knock down the edges on the stripes anyway, but Over 40 hours in three days wiped me out.

THe stripes lined up well, too!
