Basic question regarding final wet sanding

I'll be painting a fairly modern and very large car hood. Modern in that it has the proverbial base and orange peel clear. There were several issues I needed to fix which didn't require filler and primer.

My plan is to wet sand the entire hood with 800, spray two or three base coats, however many clear-coats it requires, then wet sand the clear in a few days until the orange peel is gone.

I'm well aware paint lays down much better over wet-sanded primer using 500, but do you feel 800 is 'rough' enough? My concern is for scratch marks to come through once the paint has dried.

You should be fine with the 800. Actually, you should be fine with the 500 especially since you are wetsanding as opposed to drysanding.
