Default Abs material with protective film

So, i bought this bumper cover which is abs plastic with carbon fiber protective film and i wanted to paint it black.. question is, can i paint it straight away or do i need to remove the protective film by sanding it first? Wish i can post a picture so that you can see the material.
    Thank you.

I assume the protective coating you are talking about is the epoxy clear finish they put over the carbon fiber. If so, I've prepped and painted this before. I simply sanded like normal (do not go through the clear), then sealed, then painted.
